UTA will be Zero Fare systemwide October 16–18 while fares system upgrades continue. This includes Zero Fare for Paratransit service.
Starting October 19, apply for reduced fare through a FAREPAY Card and account, as described below.
What Is Reduced Fare?
Reduced fare is a lower fare for riders who, because of age or life circumstances, have less ability to pay. Reduced fare is available only with the FAREPAY Card.
Reduced fare is $1 per local trip (bus, BRT, TRAX, S-Line, UTA On Demand) and $2 per premium trip (FrontRunner, Express Bus, Ski Bus).* With fare capping, you save even more (see below).
The reduced fare entitlement is valid for 5 years from the date of application. After this 5- year period, you will need to reapply in order to continue using reduced fare.
* FrontRunner fare includes additional $0.30 per station
Do I Qualify for Reduced Fare?
The following riders are eligible for reduced fare:
If you qualify for reduced fare based on disability, your reduced fare entitlement is valid for 5 years. After 5 years, you will need to reapply.
The Americans with Disabilities Act defines a person with a disability as “someone who:
- has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities,
- has a history or record of such an impairment (such as cancer that is in remission), or
- is perceived by others as having such an impairment (such as a person who has scars from a severe burn).”
For some examples of specific disabilities, visit the ADA website.
The reduced fare application includes a category for people with disabilities, and a separate category “Disabled with Attendant” for people who ride with someone who assists them.
If you qualify for reduced fare based on your income, your reduced fare entitlement is valid for 1 year. After a year, you will need to reapply.
Low-income eligibility is based on household income or enrollment in a Department of Workforce Services program.
Household gross (before taxes and deductions) income must not exceed:
- 1 person: $31,920
- 2 people: $43,280
- 3 people: $54,640
- 4 people: $66,000
- 5 people: $77,360
- 6 people: $88,720
- 7 people: $100,080
- 8 people: $111,440
For households of 9 or more people, add $11,000 for each additional person.
Qualifying programs from the Utah Department of Workforce Services include:
- ABD (Aging, Blind, Disabled)
- Cash/Financial Assistance (TANF)
- Child Care assistance
- Family Employment Program
- General Assistance (GA)
- Home Energy Assistance Target Program (HEAT)
- Medical Assistance
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
If you qualify for reduced fare because you are 65 or more years old, your reduced fare entitlement is valid for 5 years. After 5 years, you will need to reapply.
If you qualify for reduced fare because you are under the age of 19,* your reduced fare entitlement is valid for 5 years or until you turn 19. After 5 years, you will need to reapply.
When you turn 19, you will need to apply for reduced fare under a different qualification or start paying regular fare.
*Riders 5 years old and younger ride for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.
How Do I Apply?

Follow the steps below, or click here for a page of detailed instructions.
- On your computer or smart device, log in to your FAREPAY account.
- On the home/dashboard page, where you have one or more FAREPAY Card images, choose the image of the card that belongs to the person applying for reduced fare. Click the 3 small dots in the upper right corner of the card. (If you have not added FAREPAY Cards for other people to your account, only your card will appear.)
- A dropdown menu will appear below the 3 dots. Click the "Apply for Entitlement" menu item. A new window or page will open.

NOTES:

For more information about eligibility categories or documents to attach, review "What Documents Do I Need for My Application?" below.
If you need help with your application, call Customer Service at 801-RIDE-UTA (801-743-3882).
Once approved for reduced fare, your FAREPAY Card automatically applies your reduced fare discount across the UTA transit network, including bus, BRT, TRAX, S-Line, UTA On Demand, FrontRunner, Express Bus, and Ski Bus.*
Fare capping saves you money the more you ride. See "How Does Fare Capping Work with Reduced Fare?" below for details.
Always tap on and tap off your FAREPAY Card on bus or rail station card readers when you ride UTA. Your card is charged based on where you tap, so tap on and tap off to avoid being charged more than the value of your reduced fare trip.
When you use your card, a valid tap will show a green light with a check mark. An invalid tap will show red with an X. If the card reader returns a yellow light, check your account. You may need to reapply for reduced fare or address an issue with your FAREPAY Card.
Present your FAREPAY Card to UTA Fare Inspectors or Police Officers when asked for proof of fare payment.
*FAREPAY Cards are not accepted on UTA Paratransit service. Paratransit riders may purchase a 10-ride punch card here.

How Does Fare Capping Work With Reduced Fare?
Fare capping limits how much your FAREPAY Card is charged (whether you pay regular fare or reduced fare) during a day or calendar week. Once you reach your fare cap, you won't be charged additional eligible fares during that period. The fare cap week begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday.
| Service Type | Regular Fare (base $2.50)* | Reduced Fare (base $1)* |
| Local (bus, TRAX, S-Line, UTA On Demand | $5 daily cap $20 weekly cap |
$2 daily cap $8 weekly cap |
| Premium (FrontRunner, Express Bus, Ski Bus) | $10 daily cap $40 weekly cap |
$4 daily cap $16 weekly cap |
*The base fare for Express and Ski Bus is $5 regular and $2 reduced.
If you apply and are approved for reduced fare, your fare capping balance at the reduced fare rate begins the day you receive your reduced fare approval email from UTA.
If you have a prior fare cap balance for regular fare (by using a FAREPAY Card charging regular fare), that regular fare cap will go to a zero balance to allow the reduced fare cap to begin; your prior regular fare cap balance will not apply to your new reduced fare cap balance.
